Sherry Misner on a "Unique Memphis Experience"

In our weekly blog, "Beyond the Bio," we ask MBQ Power Players to write a post of their choosing about their industry. Well, it’s that time of year again. Dogwoods and azaleas are in full bloom, there’s Memphis in May festivities all month, the Grizzlies are definitely making us proud, and our first concert at Live is right around the corner. We all kind of held our breath and hoped. We all knew this was the kind of evening out that we would love to go to. We all knew that this was something different from anything else in Memphis at the time. We all knew that the concept of...

Edward Young of Baker Donelson on Enjoying Work Despite Industry Changes

In our weekly blog, "Beyond the Bio," we ask MBQ Power Players to write a post of their choosing about their industry. When I began practicing labor law over forty years ago, my practice was limited to an occasional United States Department of Labor Wage and Hour Investigation and dealing with the National Labor Relations Act for clients facing union organizing, contract negotiations or arbitrations. After the Memphis sanitation workers strike in 1968, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) organized other parts of city government, including what was then the John Gaston Hospital and long-term care facilities that were in Oakville and adjacent to the Shelby County Penal Farm. Shortly thereafter, an independent Hospital...

Christine Richards of EdR on "The Truths of Generation Y"

In our weekly blog, "Beyond the Bio," we ask MBQ Power Players to write a post of their choosing about their industry. This post is from the January/February issue featuring the category of Chief Operations Officers. My business is providing housing for college students. My offices all are in college towns, adjacent to or very near college campuses. Staffing these offices are employees who can be classified by any of these labels: Generation Y, Millennials, Generation We, Global Generation, Generation Next or the Net Generation. Based on my profession and my locations, those in the 30-and-under generation constitute 90% of my workforce — 800 Gen Y employees in all — and 100% of my 40,000 customers. Suffice it to say I have some experience with...

Rebecca Adelman of Hagwood, Adelman, & Tipton on "Work-Life Being"

In our weekly blog, "Beyond the Bio," we ask MBQ Power Players to write a post of their choosing about their industry. This post is the fifth from our March/April Power Player category of Personal Injury Lawyers. Last week, William Bomar discussed tips of the system. Brett Hughes of Harris, Shelton, Hanover & Walsh discussedthe value of preparation in litigation. Before that, Lang Wiseman of Wiseman Bray discussed the importance of law. Previously, Gary Smith of Apperson Crump on the importance of justice. Last night, near the end of his nighttime routine, my young son asked me to sit on his bed. “Mom, I’m the happiest kid I know. I have a super-long hug for you.” Time stood still as he embraced me with pure love....
