VP of Scan Interiors Celebrates a Quarter of a Century in the U.S.
In our weekly blog, "Beyond the Bio," we ask MBQ Power Players to write a post of their choosing about their industry. This is the first post from our June/July issue which features the category of Office Design.
This June at Scan Interiors we will be celebrating our 25th anniversary of serving Memphis and the Mid-South. And since I arrived from my home country of Denmark just a week before our store opened it is also my personal anniversary of living in the Bluff city. Hard to believe that all this time has passed but a lot has happened since we first opened in Germantown in 1988. We have moved locations twice and grown from what was an 8,000 square foot store to now an all-in-one 50,000 square foot business.
There have been plenty of challenges of course, especially since the economic downturn in 2008, but the biggest of them all has always been to sell contemporary furniture in such a traditional market. Fortunately Scandinavian furniture has and continues to be recognized for excellent craftsmanship and great quality and more and more Memphians have come to appreciate that over the years. One of my favorite things about representing this company is the fact that we really only have happy customers, a direct result of our service level and friendly business policies. I can honestly say that I enjoy what I do and being surrounded by a great group of coworkers, many of whom have been here for a long time, makes it easy to wake up in the mornings and look forward to the day ahead.
Of course I also take a certain pride in selling many products that are made or designed in my home country. I was first introduced to the US as an exchange student from Denmark through Rotary in 1983. After spending a fantastic year in high school in California I knew that I would one day make this great country my home. And after starting my career in furniture in Germany for a couple of years I finally made that dream come true when arriving here in Memphis in 1988. I have since married my “southern bell” and former Miss Memphis wife Lacye and together we have two wonderful kids. So I’m truly happy to be a Memphian now, and although working the odd hours of retail often limits my social exposure I continue to be active in Rotary now as a member of the Rotary Club of Northeast Shelby County. It is through this club and organization that I’m able to give back to a community and city that has brought me so much joy and I try my best to live up to our motto of “service above self”.
