Letter from the Editor
Welcome to the third edition of the MBQ POWER PLAYERS. You know that scene in Saving Private Ryan, when Tom Hanks looks back on the battlefield after a long day of fighting and wonders how he ever got through it alive? On a much smaller scale (much smaller, of course), that’s how it feels this moment as we go to press on the 2012 POWER PLAYERS.
We began production of the 2012 edition, honestly, just about the day after 2011 POWER PLAYERS wrapped. This publication is MBQ’s annual review of who’s who in Memphis business, a compendium of the personalities who populate the many industries that drive our city’s financial fortunes. We hope it’s a valuable guide to doing business in Memphis, as essential to newcomers as it is to old hands. We believe it adds some serious flavor to Memphis commerce and reminds us that our city’s many businesspeople and entrepreneurs are unique and that corporations are made up of individuals. The Memphis business scene is an ever-flowing river, and it changes by the day. It’s part of what keeps us coming back for more.
The 2010 Power Players featured 413 people in 34 employment categories including the inaugural Business Hall of Fame. The 2011 edition had 510 people in 42 categories. This year, POWER PLAYERS boasts 541 people in 42 categories including the Business Hall of Fame and the 2012 MBQ CEO of the Year winners.
As the saying goes, you might prefer to not know how the sausage got made, but I would like to at least acknowledge the immense efforts of the sausage-makers. The masthead to the left of this letter names names. It’s not just a team effort to produce POWER PLAYERS; it’s a team of efforts. I’d like to draw your attention in particular to the contributions of Bruce Meisterman, who not only serves MBQ as its Advertising Director but also provided the gorgeous Memphis photography interspersed throughout this publication.
Last but not least, thanks to the support provided by the POWER PLAYERS sponsors — CB Richard Ellis Memphis and Waddell & Associates, Inc. — thanks to our many wonderful advertisers, and thanks to you, the readers, who are citizens or interested outsiders who want to see Memphis thrive. We always love hearing from our readers with suggestions, comments, or story ideas. Our door is always open. Give us a holler.
Thanks for reading the 2012 POWER PLAYERS. Tomorrow, we begin working on the 2013 edition.
