04/27/12Brother International Recognized by U.S. Department of EnergyBrother International Corporation has been awarded the Energy Star rating for its 1.6 million square foot facility in Bartlett, as one of only twelve facilities in the state to earn the prestigious distinction. The largest commercial facility of the group, Brother’s certification has doubled the total amount of Energy Star square footage in Tennessee. Energy Star certification is provided by the Environmental Protection Agency in cooperation with the Department of Energy, to indicate that a product or building meets the very highest standards in energy efficiency that ultimately reduce energy costs. 04/24/12Nonprofit Conference Coming up FastThe Alliance for Nonprofit Excellence is slated to hold its 7th annual conference Wednesday, May 2, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Clark Opera Memphis Center. 04/19/12St. Jude Researcher Elected for Prestigious Fellow HonorDr. Brenda Schulman of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital's Structural Biology Department is now a 2012 fellow and foreign honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Schulman, who joined St. Jude in 2001, is being honored because of her lab's work on understanding cell regulation and division, which can go awry when disrupted and lead to cancer. The AAAS is an honorary society and independent policy research center founded in 1780. Some of its members have included George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Albert Einstein, and Winston Churchill. Current members include more than 250 Nobel laureates and more than 60 Pulitzer Prize winners. 04/16/12Lewis Appointed Chair of Access to Justice CommissionGeorge T. "Buck" Lewis of Baker Donelson is now chair of the state Supreme Court's Access to Justice Commission, which seeks to make legal representation more accessible. Lewis is a shareholder in the Memphis office of the law firm and served as president of the Tennessee Bar Association from 2008 to 2009. During that time, he launched the "4ALL" campaign for people who otherwise could not afford legal services. The campaign resulted in rule changes and an increase in attorneys offering services for free. Since his time as TBA president, Lewis also has overseen the launch of OnlineTNJustice.org. 04/11/12Crenshaw Dubbed 'Entrepreneur of the Year'Kenny D. Crenshaw, owner and president of Herbi-Systems Inc., is the Bartlett Area Chamber's latest "Entrepreneur of the Year." The award, which is in its sixth year, recognizes someone who has contributed to the local economy and who makes a difference in the way business is conducted, according to the chamber. Crenshaw has been a chamber member since 2001 and has served in leadership roles there. Herbi-Systems has been operating since 1984. It is now the second-largest lawn care service in greater Memphis after ServiceMaster's TruGreen. 04/05/12Aerotropolis Conference Slated for TuesdayAnyone interested in air traffic as a regional economic generator should mark their calendars for Tuesday, when the Mid-South Aerotropolis Conference will be held at the University of Memphis' University Center. The day-long event is a joint effort between the Greater Memphis Chamber and the university's Intermodal Freight Transportation Institute. 04/02/12SBA Loan Deadline: April 20April 20 is the deadline for any nonprofit organizations in Tennessee to submit Economic Injury Disaster Loan applications to the U.S. Small Business Administration. The loans are being made available because of severe weather that struck between June 18 and 24, 2011. The SBA offers these loans to help nonprofit agencies meet operating expenses, regardless of whether their buildings were damaged by high winds or flooding. Loan amounts can be up to $2 million with 3 percent interest. Loan terms can extend to 30 years. Examples of eligible, non-critical organizations are soup kitchens, homeless shelters, museums. libraries, community centers, and colleges.
