Over 500 Leadership Memphis alumni, corporate sponsors, and community partners enjoyed their holiday party on December 4th. The event, held at the Mercedes-Benz of Memphis Showroom, had the usual trappings of a traditional company party, but the menu was decidedly unique.
Leadership Memphis recently became a participant in the Healthy Memphis Common Table’s Million Calorie Reduction Match (MCRM) project, and the menu was a direct result of the pairing. Catered by food trucks featuring a selection of healthy options, guests were able to make more informed choices about food by viewing the caloric value of each item being served. Registered dieticians calculated the caloric content of each of the items and signs were made to inform attendees.
This extra information comes as a result of the Healthy Memphis Common Table (HMCT) initiative called the Million Calorie Reduction Match which helps businesses provide more nutritious offerings at meetings and events. The food truck vendors were Rock'N Dough Pizza Company, serving wood fired pizza on wheels, Stickem, serving skewered and grilled rib eye steak, chicken and shrimp with side items, Fuel Food Truck, serving veggie tacos with all the fixings and Yolo Frozen Yogurt for dessert.
This small but powerful act gives local leaders the opportunity to gain greater knowledge about the MCRM project and how they can join in the fight to reduce obesity in Shelby County. Million Calorie Reduction Match is a free program designed to impact the weight of the community through policy changes. MCRM staff will help organizations and employers develop, adopt, and implement policies to create an environment that encourages a reduced caloric intake and increased physical activity. MCRM is managed by the Healthy Memphis Common Table and is funded by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
Organizations that would like to learn more about how they can easily create a healthier environment can contact the Million Calorie Reduction Match Project Coordinator Mary Jo Greil at firstname.lastname@example.org or 684-6011.
