Health Science Center to Sell Works by Acclaimed Artist

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center's Physiology Department will soon benefit from the sale of 40 works by deceased local artist Paul Penczner. The works of art will be on display at the Memphis Botanic Garden throughout November.

Penczner's widow, Jolanda Penczner, donated more than 400 pieces of her husband's to the university last spring. Those pieces will become available in subsequent sales.

In the meantime, UTHSC is hosting a reception at the garden on Nov. 8. Two-hundred guests are expected.

From the 1950s onward, Penczner showed his work in more than 70 exhibitions nationwide, including the Smithsonian and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His 1989 series of pen-and-ink drawings, "Jesus Christ and the Twelve Apostles," is in the Vatican Museum of Art in Rome and was accepted by Pope John Paul II.

Another significant piece by Penczner is the painting "American Starry Night," which he donated to President George W. Bush on the first anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. It remains part of the White House Collection.
