AT&T Expands Coverage Statewide

Telecommunications giant AT&T poured $1.3 billion into souping up its wireless networks in Tennessee from 2009 to 2011, the company has reported. The bulk of that
investment went toward improving mobile Internet coverage.

In 2011 alone, the company activated 35 new cell towers, installed fiber-optic connections at more than 900 cell sites to achieve 4G data speeds, and made hundreds more improvements or expansions. All told, AT&T made 1,650 wireless upgrades in Tennessee last year, while it completed 150,000 wireless enhancements during the same
period nationwide.

AT&T bills itself as the largest Wi-Fi network in the U.S., with nearly 30,000 hotspots. It also has 190,000 hotspots worldwide.
