MCA Information Officer Completes Certification

Richard Valerga, chief information officer for Memphis City Schools, is the first public school system CIO in the nation to complete the 2011-2012 National Certified Government Chief Information Officers Program (CGCIO) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The program, which is run from the university's School of Government, is designed for government technology directors and CIOs. It is 240 hours long and teaches management, general leadership. legal, regulatory, and enterprise topics such as strategic technology planning. Since its inception in 2005, 700 public-sector leaders have graduated from the program.

Dr. Shannon Tufts, who directs CGCIO, has been recognized by Government Technology magazine as one of the 2010 Top 25 Doers, Dreamers, and Drivers for the the program's  creation and expansion.
