10/19/12Leadership Academy Changes Name to New Memphis InstituteThe Leadership Academy announced its name change today to the New Memphis Institute effective immediately. While there is a change in the name and branding, the mission and programming remain the same. The tagline, “Talent for Transformation,” speaks to the purposeful impacts the organization is making and will continue to make. “We have built a solid reputation as the talent engine for our city. 10/15/12Fred Smith Says Big Changes for FedEx"It's been said many times that the only certainty in life is change. That's been true in my life and the life of FedEx. No matter what's happening in our industry now, it won't be the same 10 years from now." So said FedEx founder Fred Smith in May in a speech to the Wings Club in New York City titled "Air Cargo: Back to the Future" that played off the 1985 movie with Michael J. Fox as time traveler Marty McFly. Someone thought enough of the speech to put it in a hardcover book distributed at the 2012 Investors and Lenders Meeting in Memphis in October. Only 16 pages, including pictures and charts, it gives as concise a history of the forces that drove the growth of FedEx (and therefore Memphis indirectly) as you will find. The Big Change... |

10/09/12Rapper Rick Ross Opens Second Restaurant in MemphisMaybach Music Group CEO and platinum recording artist Rick Ross is heating up Memphis with the opening of his latest Wingstop, located at 4697 Poplar Ave, just in time for Memphis Madness, the University of Memphis basketball kickoff event, Friday, Oct. 12 at the FedEx Forum. Ross, who rapped about his love for Wingstop and Lemon-Pepper flavored wings on his hit album Teflon Don, has a multi-unit, multi-state deal with Wingstop that includes his restaurant in Hickory Hill (7706 Winchester Road) and one in his hometown of Miami, Florida. “We’ve totally hit the spot here in Memphis,” said Ross. “I like being able to share my favorite wings and empowering the community with jobs at the same time.” As the Official Wings of the Memphis Tigers,... |
