Greater Memphis Chamber's Chairman Luncheon: Goodbyes and Hello

No big announcements came during this year’s Greater Memphis Chamber Chairman’s luncheon, but the light celebration of Southwest Airlines’ arrival balanced the departure of two major chamber leaders. The event was a sort of last hurrah for outgoing Chamber president and CEO John Moore and outgoing Chamber board chairman Larry Cox. Leigh Shockey of Drexel Chemical has been named Chair of the chamber for 2014, and Moore's replacement will be found by a search committee. Moore will depart the chamber’s top job at the beginning of January. He joined the chamber in 2005 after he moved to Memphis in 1994 to serve as Northwest Airline’s regional vice president of sales and administration. Moore oversaw $4.5 billion of new investment in Memphis and...

Valerie June Goes National

After years of hard work and dedication, all of a sudden the Mid-South's own Valerie June is everywhere. The musician has a new album out, Pushin' Against a Stone. Chris Herrington wrote about her and the album in last week's cover story in MBQ's sister publication, Memphis Flyer. The Commercial Appeal featured her this week as well. June's album is terrific. But don't just take it from us locals. June has been prominently featured nationally the last few weeks, on NPR, The New York Times Magazine, Vogue, and in Starbucks. And, tonight, June makes her network TV debut on The Late Show with David Letterman. (Channel 3 in Memphis, 10:30 p.m.) We're so happy she's getting the exposure she so richly deserved. More Than Meets the Eye: Memphis-based Silicone Arts Labs finds an alternative to plastic surgery with a product to conceal imperfections

One hot day in June, Sarah, our magazine editorial intern, and I drove the two blocks (it was that hot) from our office over to the Silicone Arts Laboratories to hear about a new product they invented and manufacture right here in the Bluff City called Dermaflage. Expecting a stereotypical “lab” setting, we were both a little shocked to walk into what was more akin to a haunted house.   No, it wasn't covered in cobwebs or spiders, and there were no witches or pumpkins, but there were silicone-made body parts such as ears, eyes, noses etc. on display. Clearly, we hadn't done our research. Once the creepy factor subsided, we sat down with Oscar Atkinson, CEO of SA labs, and Matt Singer, inventor of the Dermaflage product, anaplastologist, and former...
