10/15/12Fred Smith Says Big Changes for FedEx"It's been said many times that the only certainty in life is change. That's been true in my life and the life of FedEx. No matter what's happening in our industry now, it won't be the same 10 years from now." So said FedEx founder Fred Smith in May in a speech to the Wings Club in New York City titled "Air Cargo: Back to the Future" that played off the 1985 movie with Michael J. Fox as time traveler Marty McFly. Someone thought enough of the speech to put it in a hardcover book distributed at the 2012 Investors and Lenders Meeting in Memphis in October. 10/09/12Rapper Rick Ross Opens Second Restaurant in MemphisMaybach Music Group CEO and platinum recording artist Rick Ross is heating up Memphis with the opening of his latest Wingstop, located at 4697 Poplar Ave, just in time for Memphis Madness, the University of Memphis basketball kickoff event, Friday, Oct. 12 at the FedEx Forum. Memphis Area Legal Services' New Fundraising CampaignMemphis Area Legal Services (MALS) is launching its “We’re All In” campaign targeting legal professionals with a goal of increasing private donations and decreasing the organization’s government dependence. MALS helps more than 12,000 people annually, but with government funding down by 18 percent this year and trending toward even more significant decreases, the organization’s budget could come down over $500,000 by 2014. That translates to turning away 8,400 people in need of legal services, and MALS already has to turn away 66 percent of applicants because of lack of funding. 08/20/12ALSAC COO Dies in Car AccidentDavid L. McKee, longtime Chief Operating Officer for ALSAC, the fundraising counterpart to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, died Friday evening (August 17th) after a car accident in Memphis. McKee began at ALSAC in 1977 and has held several positions during his 35 years, including interim Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, and Senior Executive Vice President. He was influential in numerous fundraising projects including starting the St. Jude County Cares radio program. 08/17/12University of Memphis Names Dr. Tom Nenon Interim ProvostDr. Tom Nenon, a native Memphian, is announced to start September 1st as the new interim provost for University of Memphis. Nenon will be replacing Dr. Ralph Faudree who decided to step down after his 11-year term in favor of full-time teaching after a year-long sabbatical. “He is an excellent choice because he has a broad knowledge of the University and our operations, strength and respect among his faculty peers, is dedicated and has a strong work ethic,” says Shirley Raines, University of Memphis president. 08/08/12Foundation Part of Initiative to Help Women ProsperThe Women's Foundation for a Greater Memphis (WFGM) is helping launch an initiative called A Partnership for Women's Prosperity with help from a $3.4 million grant from the Walmart Foundation. Other participating organizations include the Washington Area Women's Foundation, the New York Women's Foundation, the Women's Fund of Mississippi, the Women's Foundation of Minnesota, and the Women's Funding Network. All six organizations are using the grant money to support job training, employment, access to education, and leadership development for economically vulnerable women. WFGM's two-year, $400,000 piece of the grant is expected to help 430 local women. The money will be distributed in grants to local nonprofit orgs. |
